Rescuing Rufus

I have had rescue dogs in the past, but I was always partial to German Shepherds. Tired of all the hair, I started researching the different breeds, and I spent a year deciding on a standard poodle and finding a suitable one from a rescue (I don't buy from breeders anymore).
Rufus was five months old when we got him - he had been at the rescue for a month. They had taken him and his brother from a puppy mill, and his rear legs had suffered from muscle atrophy due to being in a cage. He had a hard time standing up, and rarely moved at all, but he was sweet and loving from the start.
Two years later, he is a healthy, vibrant dog. Although he holds his own with his older brother and sister (both black German shepherds) in the romps in the yard, he is very calm and affectionate with people. Several months ago, I found out about a local volunteer program for pet visitation at a rehab hospital. I've always wanted to try it, so I decided to see how Rufus did. We have been going twice a month since, and the nurses tell me that sometimes the only time the residents smile is when Rufus comes to visit.
Like all breeds, Standards aren't for everyone (and it is IMPERATIVE that you find a good groomer), but I will definitely rescue another one sometime in the future. Rufus is full of love and fun, and I love him dearly.
