"I just love my Red Standard Poodle
she's such a vibrant color!"
I get so many comments, compliments and questions about my beautiful red standard poodle Meg, that I thought I just had to devote an entire page them. She has such a gorgeous red color, which fortunately, hasn’t faded much. From my experiences taking her on outings, people have never seen a red standard poodle, or hardly ever seen standard poodles for that matter!
The beautiful red color that we see today, is all due to the many years of diligent breeding by Ilse Konig of the Shangri-La kennel. She saw a red miniature poodle at a dog show in Germany in 1980 and decided to try and develop a red standard.
She teamed with Palamares Kennel in Oregon and bred one of their oversized red miniature dogs to one of Shangri-La’s small, English apricot, standard females. This breeding resulted in four puppies of a gorgeous red color! Although they were cute, they were not the quality and size they were striving for. Their size was in-between a miniature and a standard poodle, often called a “Caniche” today.
Since they had no outside gene pool available, they had to keep the largest red puppy of each litter, which gradually increased the size each generation. Today, they have large reds up to 26 inches. To this date, there are only three red US Champions.
The above picture shows the distinct difference between my red poodle Meg and my apricot poodle Bob.
Here's an excellent video from Bijou Standard Poodles showing the difference in color between the red and brown Standard Poodles.
