You’ve done your research on the breed and checked out various breeders and decided you’d like to get a Standard Poodle puppy! That’s great! They make wonderful pets! As cute and cuddly as Standard Poodle puppies are, they can be a handful with housebreaking, chewing, etc. One way to bypass most of the challenges of puppyhood is to adopt an adult Standard Poodle! It also gives you the satisfaction of knowing you are saving a dog’s life.
Why do Poodles End Up in Rescue?
Poodles end up in rescue centers for a variety of reasons. Some are legitimate reasons such as divorce, moving, or health reasons of the owner. Others end up there due to neglect, abuse or abandonment. Whatever the reason, each one is placed in a home that will give it love, attention and companionship.
Most Poodles that end up in rescue centers are male and are usually over five years old. For some unknown reason, many people seem to want to adopt female Poodles. There is really no logical reason for this, as male Poodles are just as smart, attentive, and well behaved as the females. My own male Poodles seem to have a more comical nature!
All placements are given a full veterinary exam, updated immunizations and spay or neuter if necessary. They are also pre-screened for any temperament issues.
The dogs are placed in a foster homes varying anywhere from a few weeks to several months, in order to evaluate their health and temperament. The people who foster Poodles are strictly volunteers, often paying for food and treatment out of their own pockets.
Adopting a Poodle isn’t just a simple case of going and picking out a dog and bringing it home. There is a thorough screening process involved to make sure you get the dog that best fits your lifestyle and that the dog gets the best home. The rescuers will probably ask you several questions about your lifestyle and why you want a Poodle. They may even want to come to your home to check out the accommodations for your potential family member.
The adoption fees for Poodles usually runs around $200 for Toy and Miniatures and $300 for Standards.
So, before you run out and get that puppy, consider adopting a sweet, older Poodle. Your home will be a better place for having such a dog!
Below is a list of Poodle rescue centers across the country. Check one out, you won’t be sorry!
