A Phantom Poodle is not an apparition or ghostly figure, but it is a bi-colored Poodle! Although you don’t see them very often, they are not a new color; they’ve been around for quite a while.
They aren’t the same markings as a Parti. They are marked the same as a Doberman, although they don’t have to be the same color as a Doberman. There are several different color combinations such as black and apricot, black and silver, black and red, brown and red, red and apricot, and silver and cream. Any of these colors are acceptable, as long as they conform to the allowable standards.
In Germany before January 2005, the German Poodle Club only allowed them to be bred with each other. Apricot puppies born from these breedings were barred from further breeding. As a consequence of these strict breeding rules, breeding animals are too closely related to one another. This inbreeding caused several defects such as a long lower jaw, overbite, lacking teeth or too many teeth. Also, some of the color pigmentations are not correct or missing. The dogs with black or apricot pigmentation were fading too early.
Because of this, the German Poodle Club decided to allow mating of phantom poodles with apricot and black ones as of January 1, 2005. This will allow for a vast improvement in the line.
The UKC allows them to be shown in the conformation show ring. The AKC only allows them in agility or obedience.
