Today, people can barely afford their own medical insurance, so why would you want to get pet insurance for your Standard Poodle! Well, the cost of veterinary care has skyrocketed over the last several years with the advancement of new equipment and medicines. Treatments that were only available to humans a few years ago are now available for animals.
It may seem that it would make better sense to put aside the money in an “interest bearing” savings account for treatments, but you have to be very disciplined to stick to that plan. If you’re like me, I find it easier to pay a premium than to save the money.
If your Standard Poodle were to come down with “bloat” unexpectedly, you’d be very glad you had pet insurance! Unexpected, emergency medical treatments can cost you several hundred to thousands of dollars if you have to pay them yourself. If you’re the type of person who would pay almost anything to save your pets life, then obtaining insurance may well be an alternative to going into debt.
Most pet insurance does not cover routine care or preventative treatment, such as annual exams, worming and immunizations, nor does it cover elective procedures. The biggest advantage of having it is to cover the “unexpected” medical emergencies that can happen and which are usually the most expensive treatments.
Reading all the information about the different types of pet insurance can be a confusing and time confusing matter. Hopefully the information provided here will help you decide which insurance will be the best for your pet.
What Flavors does it come in?
Now that you know what pet insurance doesn’t pay for, what exactly does it cover and what are the different types of insurance.
Pet insurance comes in three types:
There is a cap set on the value of the claim for each condition or incident.
The yearly annual payout is set at a certain amount.
Lastly, the amount of payout per condition is limited and ends covering your pet after a year of treatment. This is the least expensive choice.
How much is this all going to cost me?
There are many different variables that come in to play here, just like when you are buying car insurance. The cost depends on the type of policy you want and how much extra you are will to pay over what the policy pays. The cost can also be determined by the type of dog you have, its age, and even the zip code that you live in!
Which One to Choose?
Before deciding which insurance is best for you and your pet, you’ll need to do your homework. There are several things you’ll need to consider:
If possible try and insure your pet when it is young and healthy. The older the pet, the harder it is to insure and the more it costs. Also, older pets develop long-term health conditions and many plans won’t cover “pre-existing conditions.”
If your pet is a purebred, it’s a know fact that you’ll probably end up paying more in medical expenses over it lifetime.
One way to save money on the premium is to ask if they give discounts for more than one pet.
Ask if they give discounts for pets that have been micro chipped.
How are the claims handled, annually, or on a “per condition” basis?
Is there a time limit on a “per condition” claim?
What is the dollar limit on vet fees?
If you lose your pet, does the insurance cover the cost of advertising and rewards?
Does your insurance cover the cost of kenneling your dog if you have to go to the hospital?
Does the plan cover liability in case your dog should happen to injure someone?
Does the plan payout if your dog dies?
Some plans may even reimburse you if your dog is stolen.
Ultimately, you want insurance from a reputable company that will insure your pet for its lifetime, hopefully, with no surprise exclusions and no lifetime condition limits. Of course, the better the coverage, the more you’ll have to pay!
Where Can I Find All This Information?
You might try asking your veterinarian, but generally they only carry one or two plans and don’t usually have time to keep current on the plans. If any of your friends have pet insurance, ask them what they think of their plan. Personally, I found the internet to be the best source. You can find information about several different plans. You can probably get the cheapest rates online also.
Peace of Mind!
We all love our Poodles. Finding out they have a medical condition that we can’t afford to treat can be heartbreaking! Knowing I have pet insurance to help offset the cost of their medical treatment is worth the cost to me. It may well be the right choice for you also!
