I designed this site to pass on the knowledge and love I have developed for Standard Poodles since we’ve developed our growing Poodle family over the last six years. I’m by no means an expert in the field, nor am I a breeder, just a Poodle lover. I can, however, help you to better understand them and give you tips on poodle care,nutrition and health problems, in case you are contemplating getting a poodle in the near future. I will also point you to available poodle resources and information in the United States.
Poodles come in three recognized sizes, the Standard Poodle being the largest, (Royal Standard Poodles are not a recognized breed of Poodle) the Miniature Poodle and the Toy Poodle. I have the honor of being owned by two Standard Poodles at the moment, Meg and Ed. Both of them have excellent personalities, although they are two totally different personalities. They are by no means show dogs, although they are registered with the American Kennel Club (AKC) and do have champions in their pedigrees. They are just companion dogs and great companions they are!
Meg is a Red Standard and is five years old. She is very ladylike, sophisticated and elegant. She is very quiet and laid back. She loves to chase butterfly shadows around the yard for hours. She thinks she is a lap dog, but can only fit halfway on your lap with her back legs still on the floor. She is about 24 inches at the withers (shoulders) and about 55 pounds.
Although she is not a show dog, she has won two informal competitions at local festivals in our community. The first was when she was six months old and won "Best Looking Dog" and "Best Costume" at the Rock Shrimp Festival and the most recent was a few months ago where she won "The Best Dressed Dog In Camden County, Georgia," in a Pet Expo contest. Here's a picture of her dressed up. It was in the newspaper and she won a trophy and a gift cerfificate for $50 at the local pet shop.
Ed is an Apricot Standard and is three years old. He is a huge standard, sometimes mistakenly called a Royal Standard. He is about 27.5 inches at the withers and weighs approximately 75 pounds. He is a happy-go-lucky goofy kind of dog who loves to play and have his neck rubbed. He loves those soft, plush, squeaky toys and will play with them for hours. He thinks the couch is his and takes up the whole thing when he lies down. He's not really into the whole competition thing or getting dressed up and is not as tolerate of it, so we don't bother making him do it.
You may ask why we chose to get Standards? Well, before the poodles, we had English Cockers and although they were very pretty dogs, they were kind of hyper and boy did they shed! In case you don’t know it, Poodles technically don’t shed the way other dogs do. They also don’t have a bad doggy odor like some dogs do. One other thing I like about them is they don’t have saggy lips that drool everywhere. My husband wanted a bigger dog than we had before and Standard Poodles fit the bill. To me, they seem to be the perfect dog!
Intelligence wise, Poodles are the smartest dog next to the Border Collie, but not as hyper. Meg and Ed went to obedience school and were at the top of the class.
Our Standard Poodles have excellent temperaments and seem to get along with everyone, kids and adults. Whenever there is a festival or outdoor event in town, we always take them and they are always a big hit. Everyone wants to pet them, take pictures and ask us all about them. They love the attention! They’re not afraid of crowds or loud noises.
They love riding in the car, or I should say SUV. They jump right in the back ready to go. Ours don’t get carsick and usually just go to sleep. They enjoy going swimming at the beach, the dog park, or just to Dairy Queen for some vanilla ice cream!
