Hiking with Your Standard Poodle

If you like spending time with your dog, then you may enjoy going hiking together. It can be a lot of fun, for you and your dog, and it is an inexpensive activity that both of you can participate in for bonding and some great excitement. However, before you decide to go, there are a variety of things you are going to need to do in preparation. You’ll need to learn where you can hike with your dog, what you need to take along, become aware of the dangers, and learn dog hiking etiquette.

Preparation

Before you actually go, both you are your dog are going to have physically prepare. If you’re out of shape, you’re going to have to work on getting in better shape before you go. You may want to do some walking every day or ride a bike each day to build up your endurance in preparation for your trip.

Of course, you’re not the only one that will need to be prepared for the trip. You’ll also need to be sure that your dog is prepared as well. One of the main things you’ll need to remember is to make sure your dog is well trained before you decide to go. Your dog will need to be obedient to all of your commands, so some obedience training is going to be necessary. Also, you’ll want to be sure that your dog is in good physical shape too. Take him on your morning walks and make sure he exercises each day before you go on your trip.

What to Take on your Hike

Once you’re ready to hike with your dog, then you’ll need to take a variety of things with you. Both of you can carry a pack. You can carry a backpack and your dog can carry a dog backpack. Make sure that you don’t put too much in your dog’s pack and be sure that the pack fits right, so it won’t cause any friction.

One of the most important things you’ll need to take along is water for both of you. It may be hot, so you’ll need to stay hydrated along the way. Be sure you have a portable water bowl for the water too. Food is another important thing to take along. As well as food for you, make sure you have plenty of dog food and some doggie treats to keep your pooch nourished. You should also include a first aid kit that has supplies for you and your dog.

Both you and your dog will also need some insect repellent, to keep the bugs away. To avoid any problems, be sure that your dog has his ID tags on him in case he happens to get lost. Take some plastic bags to get rid of the doggie waste that may occur along the way.

Dangers to Consider

Before you go out trekking, there are several dangers that you need to keep in mind. The following are a few you need to be aware of and prepared for on your hiking trip.

  • Hunting Zones – First of all be aware of hunting zones. The last thing you want is you and your dog to get shot at. If you will be near any hunting areas, you may want to wear orange and put orange on your dog as well for protection.
  • Chasing – Another danger that could occur is your dog chasing off after other animals. You don’t want your dog to get lost in the middle of the woods. So, make sure that he is on a leash and that he responds to your commands as well.
  • The Heat – The heat can be another danger that you’ll need to watch out for. Make sure that you take some time to rest so that neither of you get over heated and also be sure that you both stay well hydrated.
  • poodles with boots
  • The Cold – Dogs can get hypothermia when their body temperature falls below 101. If the weather is cold, make sure your dog wears a dog jacket. Also, if there is snow on the ground, invest in dog boots so he doesn’t get cracked, damaged paws.
Dog Hiking Etiquette

There’s some hiking etiquette that you’ll need to keep in mind. Of course, you’ll need to be sure that you clean any messes that your dog may make. You definitely don’t want someone else to come along and step in the mess that your dog left. Also, be sure that you let other hikers pass you and keep your dog from approaching them. Horses should be allowed to pass you on the trails as well and you should always be courteous to others on the trail.

Here's an excellent book about Hiking with your dog.
