Standard Poodles -
Ground Transportation

Ground transportation is another option to consider for shipping or moving your Standard Poodle across country instead of air travel or traveling with your Poodle in your own vehicle.

Traveling with your Poodle in your own vehicle may be fun if you have the time, room, patience, money and can find lodging that will allow pets. Not everyone has that luxury though!

You will need to do your homework before choosing a ground transportation company for your Poodle. Make sure the one you choose is a member of the Independent Pet and Animal Transportation Association (IPATA) and is licensed by the USDA-APHIS program under the Federal Health and Welfare Transport Act.

The USDA inspects the transport companies regularly to make sure that all federal rules for safe transportation are followed. Ground transportation companies are required by law to be licensed and renew every three years.

It is also a good idea to make sure the driver/attendants are bonded, as well as experienced in animal care.

Check out the vehicles that will be used for ground transportation. Some companies use SUVs, minivans, motor home and other transport vehicles. Whatever they use, make sure they are properly ventilated and climate controlled.

There are several ways of keeping track of your Poodle’s location while traveling, such as, cell phone, email and web based tracking systems that let you track your Poodle’s condition and location live online.

All animals except rodents, fish, and reptiles are required to have an official state-issued health certificate for interstate travel issued by a qualified veterinarian. This certificate needs to be acquired no more than 10 days prior to departure. While the health certificate states the animal is free from infectious diseases and is current on all immunizations, it does not indicate that the animal is in good health.

Most ground transportation companies will allow a reasonable number of toys, bedding and food to travel with your Poodle to make him feel comfortable during travel. It’s also a good idea, to have an item of clothing with the scent of the person it is most closely associated with.

Depending on the age of the dog, he will either be walked several times a day on a leash, or allowed to exercise in an exercise pen if he is a puppy. This allows them plenty of time to exercise and have a potty break as well. Puppies need to be at least 8 weeks old to be transported.

Check out the sanitation procedures of the animal attendants. Do they sanitize their hands before touching another dog to avoid passing on diseases? It is also recommend that dogs have their Bordetella (kennel cough) shots prior to transport. Most of the animal attendants on the trip are qualified to administer medications. Find out what the charge is for administering medications. It can run around $5 per day for oral medications and $10 per day for injections.

The trip can take anywhere between one and four days depending on several factors including: mileage, weather, road conditions and traffic.

Some of the companies offer private transport, meaning your Standard Poodle and other pets are the only ones on board. This causes a less stressful trip because they are with familiar animals and causes less chance of contracting diseases.

Most ground transportation carriers do not allow wire carriers for safety reasons. You can either purchase your own plastic carrier or possibly rent one from the company. The carrier should be large enough that your Poodle can stand, sit and turn around comfortably.

Some companies give a discount if you are booking more than one animal. Guide dogs and service animals as well as active military personnel shipping their animals get a discount as well.

If you are transporting your Poodle due to a job, the cost is tax deductible according to IRS publication number 521.

Sometimes there is a charge if the ground transportation company has to pick up or deliver your Poodle 20 or more miles off the Interstate. It can be $3.00 or more per mile starting from the Interstate. You may want to meet the transport vehicle closer to the Interstate to avoid this charge.
