Enchanted Poodle Rescue of New Mexico

Our family of five had made the decision to get a dog. After a long and exhaustive search on breeds, we decided on the Standard Poodle. The breed is known to be very intelligent, a good family pet and hypo allergenic.
We contacted the rescue group, put our name on a waiting list and waited several months. Finally, the call came in there was an adult female available. We went through the application process and spent the afternoon with Buttons (a six year old black standard).
Buttons former owners health were declining and their three dogs were given to the rescue organization.
It was an immediate match. The children (ages 8,6, and 4) fell in love with her. This would be their very first pet.
We adopted Buttons on leap day February 29th. She transitioned nicely into the family and thrives on the attention she gets from the children. My husband, a reluctant pet owner now adores her and "can't believe he could love a dog as much as he does".
Buttons had been neglected for several years, left outside and never groomed. After a good cleaning and grooming she is a very pretty lady. She is learning basic commands quickly and loves her walks. Sadly, we found out on our first vet visit that she had heart worm. We are concerned about the treatment and side effects but can't imagine life without her and do not want her to get sick. So, we now are trying to work out her treatment plan and how to rest an active poodle for 4 weeks in a house full of activity! We just love our Standard, she is the very best girl ever!
