Generally, it is an exclusive area where dogs are invited, not just permitted to play off leash.
Dogs are required to be off leash. Most dogs are not aggressive when they are not in their own territory. A dog that is leashed, may feel threatened when the other dogs are off leash.
Some parks are small, possibly only one-half acre or so, and some may be several acres in size.
The safest ones for the dogs are those that are fenced in, so there’s no chance of the dog escaping.
Some parks may be free to enter and others may charge a per-use fee or an annual membership fee. You’ll find that fees are most common with privately owned parks.
The most successful ones are those with an active users group that can oversee the dogs in the park and help prevent dog fights. They also educate visitors on the rules of the park and about cleaning up after their dogs.
General Park Rules
Although not all inclusive, the following rules are generally required to be followed at most parks:
Make sure you know what your Standard Poodle is doing at all times
If your dog is being annoying or aggressive to another dog or its owner, move your dog to a different area of the park, leave the park or do whatever needs to be done to correct the problem
Dogs should be off leash at all times unless a problem occurs and you need to remove your dog from the area
Rough play is fine if both dogs are OK with it. If any of the dogs are uncomfortable, stop the rough play immediately
Children should be over 4 feet tall to use the park. Carrying small babies is OK. Do not allow your children to chase dogs, run around or pet other dogs without the owner’s permission
Clean up your dog’s poop or any other you happen to see. The park should have bags and trash receptacles available
Your Standard Poodle should have license tags attached to a flat buckle collar or breakaway collar
Visitor male dogs over seven months of age should be neutered. Dogs of an aggressive nature such as pit bulls and other bull terrier type dogs as well as chows and akitas must be neutered
Digging is only allowed in designated areas. Please fill in any holes your dog may dig
Some parks limit no more than 3 dogs per person on any visit
No dogs in heat, sick dogs or dogs with fleas are allowed
Below are some links to various dog parks and directories of parks across the country. I'll be adding to the list all the time, so check one out; your Standard Poodle will love it!
