You may laugh, but dog day care is becoming a thriving industry! The idea of day care for dogs is to provide and environment that is safe and healthy and allows the dogs to interact with other dogs and people. This is a much better alternative than having your best friend home all day by himself without any exercise or attention.
Dog day care allows your Standard Poodle the opportunity to participate in group play, lounging around, swimming, chewing on dog toys, or a great game of chase! There is often equipment provided, like agility equipment, that your dog can jump on, climb on or run through and under.
Dog day care originated in California in 1987 and has rapidly spread across the country. Many boarding kennels and groomers have added day care to their services. They can also include other activities such as obedience training, canine massage, and vet checkups. Many of the facilities also sell dog toys, dog treats, and grooming equipment. Although costs are generally higher than boarding costs, you’ll find they all have a variety of different cost packages to suit most dog owners.
Normally, the day care centers are held in large buildings such as a renovated warehouse that can be divided for small, medium and large dogs. They generally have a large outdoor exercise area as well as an indoor space in case of inclement weather.
What is the Screening Process?
Most centers have a screening process that involves interviewing the client to assure that the dog is not aggressive towards its food or toys, afraid of humans or protective of its territory. They will also evaluate the dog’s tolerance to being touched and reaction to loud noises. They are also watched to see how they interact with other dogs and their owners. The way the owner interacts with the dog can give a lot of clues to the dog’s behavior.
There are medical requirements for the day care centers as well. Most require that dogs are current on all immunizations, as well as measures to prevent fleas, ticks and heartworms. Unless you are a breeder, most dogs must be spayed or neutered if over six months old.
How do I Choose a Dog Day Care?
Choosing your day care facility is just as important as choosing your vet, groomer or boarding kennel for your Standard Poodle. Although there aren’t many day care facilities in most areas to allow you the luxury of comparing services and experiences before choosing, make sure you do thoroughly check out the ones that are available in your area. As well as being convenient, the facility should be clean, the staff experienced and the price within your budget.
Points to Consider
Is the staff proactive with the dogs or are they just casually supervised?
What kind of training does the staff have?
Is there a time-out area and what circumstances would warrant a time-out?
What kind of security measures does the facility have so the dogs cannot escape?
Does the staff know how to administer medications?
What kind of play areas are there? If there aren’t any, are the dogs walked on a leash?
How many staff members are there to each dog? Ideally, there should be one staff member for every 10-15 dogs.
What do they do if there is a medical emergency? Do they take your dog to your own vet or one used by the facility?
How does the staff interact with the dogs? Do they enjoy being with them?
