     Standard Poodles -
     Choosing a Dog Bed

standard poodle sleeping
Your Standard Poodle spends lots of time sleeping, so he needs to have a comfortable
dog bed where he feels safe and secure. Your poodle’s temperament, age, size and
sleeping habits are just as important when choosing one as the construction and quality.

Where do you plan on placing your Poodle’s sleeping area? Will it be in your room,
living room, porch or perhaps a crate? With all the different styles and shapes
available, you can go as basic or flamboyant as you want. You may even want
to get a designer dog bed and match it to your home décor. If you can afford it, you may
want to have more than one and spread them around your house.

When you are buying a bed for your Poodle puppy, buy one that it can grow
into, but not so large that it will feel lost in it. If it is too small or too large, your Poodle
may find other sleeping accommodations.

For a puppy, it’s best to get one that is low, so it is easy to get in and out of.
It doesn’t need to be very heavily padded, but padded enough to support its weight
as it grows. You should also look for one with a removable, washable cover,
since puppies tend to have accidents. There are also covers that resist germs, odors
and mold and mildew.

The construction is also important when choosing one. Generally, the three types are
polyfil, foam and box spring construction, with polyfil being the most economical. The filling
should spring back and not be compacted after repeated use. You can also get a cedar
dog bed. These help repel fleas.

Types of Beds

It’s hard to predict what your Poodle’s sleeping preferences will be when it is still a
puppy, so it is hard to decide which type of bed it will prefer, but you will have plenty of
time to observe its sleeping habits as it grows. Below are some of the different types
you may want to consider:

Round, Nesting or Pillow – These are perfect for Poodles that like to sleep curled up
in a ball or snuggle down into something really comfortable with high walls. They are
great for keeping your Poodle warm during cold weather.

Bolster Dog Beds – These are great for larger dogs like Poodles who like to sleep on your
couch with their head on an armrest or pillow. Get them their own couch to sleep on!

Rectangular - Our Poodle Bob loves to stretch out flat as far as he can when he sleeps!
Large stuffed rectangular ones are perfect for this sort of sleeper. Make sure you
measure your dog when he is stretched out and add about another five inches for
the correct size.

Orthopedic - If your Poodle is older or possibly has Hip Dysplasia, you may want to consider
an orthopedic medical grade foam dog bed or a heated dog bed. These provide extra padding to help
protect joints and the heat can help sooth aches and pains and provide warmth.

Cooling Dog Beds - If your Poodle gets hot easily, you may want to consider a cooling
dog bed. If your dog doesn’t chew, this may be an excellent choice in an outside
kennel in hot weather.

Chew Proof Dog Beds - If you Poodle chews, then you may want to consider a Kuranda bed.
These are virtually indestructible dog beds and are weatherproof.

Pads and Mats - If your Poodle sleeps in a crate, there are all types of crate pads and
mats available, as well as crate covers to provide more privacy. Mats and pads
are also great for portable sleeping areas.

Choosing and buying a bed for your Poodle shouldn’t be as confusing or costly as buying
your own home’s furniture. You should be able to find a comfortable, economical one if
you follow the tips above.
