Another member of my extended pet family that I have to mention is my Birman cat named Star. She is a funny looking cat, because she has no tail!
I first came across Star hanging around our house a lot when we first moved in to our subdivision. She was such a friendly, loving cat that just loved to be petted. One day, I gave her a leftover pork chop and she never left!
I wanted to keep her because I thought she might be a stray, so I put a notice up at our community mailbox that I had found a cat. No one responded to it, but our neighbor next door (who had a large male Birman) mentioned that he thought it was his next door neighbors cat.
So, I went down to their house to see if they did, in fact, own the cat. When I got there, they weren’t home, but there were other cats and kittens around their house that looked like Birmans and some had tails and some didn’t! I just thought Star had been in some kind of accident, like getting her tail caught in a door. She just happened to be born that way.
Anyway, I went back later to inquire about Star, but they said they wanted to keep her. She still kept coming around our house and come to find out, she was pregnant by the cat next door. Since the people that owned her weren’t taking good care of her, I made her a maternity box in our garage and she had six kittens. Three had no tails and the other three did! I kept the kittens for a few days, but felt guilty and finally gave them back to the owners. They said I could keep one of the kittens. I kept the biggest furry one with a tail.
After a few months, their daughter came down to our house with Star and said we could keep her. Her father was dying of cancer and they were trying to get rid of all the cats. So, that’s how I ended up with Star.
What is a Birman Cat?
The Birman is a rather stocky cat. It’s hair is long, soft and reasonably thick, but not as thick as a Persian and it doesn’t mat. It kind of has a light creamy colored coat. The markings are similar to a Siamese, with the “points” – face, legs and tail being darker. They have blue eyes. They don’t have a flat face like a Persian. They have white feet or gloves on the front and a white point up the back of the rear legs called laces. And, of course, they do have tails!
I’m not an expert on Birman cats, so if you’d like more information you can check out the Cat Fanciers Association.
